Low Level Storage

It really depends on what you are looking for, there are postitives and negatives to both solutions:

Wicker Baskets create a warm, homely feel for storing books and resources. However, they can be harder to clean and potentially don’t last as long due to the nature of the material.

Plastic tubs are great for storing messy items such as art and sand and water resources. They allow children to easily see what is being stored in them, but they can look more functional and less inviting.

In most settings a mixture of the two options is preferable.

From a practical point of view, low units offer physical support for babies and toddlers to pull themselves up, balance and cruise.

Navigating pathways created by units will encourage children to negotiate spaces and move safely around, hence improving spatial awareness.

Good EYFS storage should be stable but not static. Children benefit from knowing where familiar resources are, whilst practitioners need the flexibility to introduce new things without destabilising the environment. Maintaining the same furniture whilst updating resources and decorations achieve this.

The simple answer is yes. Open, low-level shelving prevents the noise and clutter of deep, overflowing toy boxes and creates a more focused classroom. Low level units can be used to delineate areas, creating specific zones such as reading areas or home corners, children have a sense of security and purpose when areas are defined.

Low level units make it easy for children to actively participate in ‘tidy-up time’ turning what could be a chore into active learning. When storage boxes and baskets are labelled with images or words, children learn to sort, categorise and match objects by type, shape or size.
