What would you prefer if you were 5 years old?

5-year-preference

Lying on the floor under the desk and drawing a picture on the paper stuck to the underside of the table or…sat at a chair drawing on top of the desk? Well I’d bet money that every child would choose the lying on the floor option! When else do they get a chance to a) lie on the floor at school & b) draw upside down?

drawing-under-table

The only minus here is you could end up with 30 children with one rather muscular forearm! Have you tried drawing upside down lying on the floor? Well I have (for the purposes of this blog, of course) and after a while it’s pretty straining on your arm muscles. At least I don’t have to go to the gym this week and it might actually fix my bingo wings!.

The point is there are billions of ways to make the things you teach in class, more exciting and memorable for the children and best of all (your Head will thank you for this bit) they are inexpensive or even better free!.

With the help of some of our teacher friends we’ve come up with a few more ingenious and resourceful tricks to inject some fun into your teaching school day..

jelly-worm

Jelly worms, vinegar & baking soda that’s about all you need for this clever science activity. I did say it was inexpensive and you’ll only need a handful of jelly worms for the whole class too! (I’m sure you’ll find a way to use up the rest of the packet!).

Take a look at this link: http://www.playdoughtoplato.com/kids-science-dancing-frankenworms/, as there is a step by step guide on how to make your worms dance! Yes that’s right, dancing worms! How much fun is that?

number-line

When it comes to maths, we all know that taking your learning outside into nature is exceptionally valuable but unfortunately most of us don’t all have a Forest School right outside our classroom. But how about a giant outdoor number line? All you need is chalk! Can you imagine your class drawing a number line that stretches the entire playground? Wow, how brilliant would that look?.

If you get a chance to try out any of these activities please do share your stories and photos with us on Facebook, we’d love to see!.

Wishing you a happy sparkly joyful day The DFE team..
