The World Through The Eyes Of A Two Year Old

BabyBookBoxWith the number of two-year-olds entitled to free childcare expected to double in September 2014, schools are being urged to admit two-year-olds into on-site nurseries to ease the shortage of childcare.

Whilst some feel schools cannot meet the specific learning, developmental and environmental needs of two-year-olds, many early years experts say it is not the schools themselves that is the problem – the question is about whether the quality of the setting is appropriate for a two-year-olds needs.

At two-years of age, learning should be play-based and child-led. Children need opportunities to move and be active, as well as small spaces where they can feel safe and secure.

Seeing The World Through The Eyes Of A Two-Year-Old

Think about what it feels like for a two-year-old in your setting in terms of:

Clear_View_Wall_Display1. Opportunities for children to stand, sit and lie crawl and climb

2. Flexible use of space and furniture

3. Resources stored at the height where children can see and access them independently

4. Consideration of the senses; use of colour, lighting, smell, texture, sound

5. Wall displays – mirrors are fab for this

6. Appropriate flooring for a range of activities
